Why Is There No
Computer Based HRR?

Various firms have launched development efforts
over the years to try to develop a computer version of a
pseudoisochromatic-plate color vision test. There are several key
technical problems, which hinder successful development of such a test,
and which remain unsolved.
First, no reliable low cost method has been
developed to calibrate the CMYK computer monitor so that the colors
presented accurately align with the colors required for the test.
Formulating the colors of the HRR 4th Edition plates was a
particularly difficult problem, which required substantial effort before
printing. The slightest error in reproduction of the color by any means
would likely invalidate the results of the test.
Second, color monitors may not achieve the level
of color saturation required by the pseudoisochromatic design. The
following figure shows that the RGB color space of typical CRTs is
significantly smaller than the visible color space. The color space
needed to produce proper pseudoisochromatic test colors exceeds that
available from the RGB color space, and the resultant image generated by
the computer on a CRT screen or other modes of display, such as
projection.

space. The Black outline represents the CMYK color space)
