The Awaya Stereo test was developed by Dr Shinobu Awaya, M.D. from Nagoya University in Japan. The test  provides several improvements compared to other stereo tests which have been available for some time. A test for stereopsis should be conducted to obtain a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of binocular function, especially in cases of heterophoria,  heterotropia and amlyopia. Up until now, most stereopsis tests were designed using crossed disparity, so that a fused image comes out towards the examinee.  It has been demonstrated that esophoric patients are more likely to have a greater stereo acuity with uncrossed disparity . The Awaya stereo test was developed to test for both crossed and uncrossed disparities.

INCREASED RELIABILITY

The Awaya Stereo test employs the more reliable  red/green glasses to provide image separation eye to eye. The Awaya Stereo test is not dependent on polarizing spectacles which can be quite tricky to use because they must be accurately aligned horizontally with the test book/picture, or there will be leakage of the image in the eye that is not supposed to see the respective image. When this does occur, all sorts of errors of under diagnosis and over diagnosis can occur. Polarizing spectacle tests should have some sort of frame between the spectacles and the book/picture to guarantee proper alignment. There is no such frame available. If it were, it would hinder the use of the test.

ATTRACTIVE TARGET MAINTAINS ATTENTION

In the Awaya test, the first target is an attractive image of a butterfly, not an abstract or line drawing, which makes the test less fearful and more attractive for children. It is NOT a fly, which some other stereo tests use and which can cause revulsion or fright in various patients.

MORE COMPLETE TEST

In the Awaya test, the first target, the butterfly, contains not one test but actually three tests. First, the stereo-depth is greatest for the antenna, less for the front wings and the least for hind-wings, so that it is in fact three tests are included in one covering the largest grades of stereoscopic depth perception.

ESO DEVIATIONS DETECTED

The Awaya test also includes an additional full test plate specifically designed for subject-patients with eso deviations.  These patients often have difficulties with the conventional Stereotest and this part of the Awaya test has been designed to address those eso deviation patients.  This type of  test-plate is not available in any other stereo test.
