ANISEIKONIA

Binocular condition in which the two eyes perceive images of unequal size or shape. Current solutions are based on changing prescription parameters such as base curve, lens thickness, index, and vertex distance to provide aniseikonic correction.

INCREASING INCIDENCE ANISEIKONIA

Aniseikonia used to be a condition applicable only to anisometropes, but the incidence of Aniseikonia has increased considerably because of refractive and cataract surgery (LASIK, PRK, LASEK, etc.). Kramer et al. found that 40% of all pseudophakes had ophthalmic complaints referable to Aniseikonia (and in the US there are 1.5 Million cataract operations annually). Sensitive patients may already experience aniseikonic symptoms, such as headaches and astenopia, at 1% Aniseikonia. As many as 3% of your patient's may have symptoms or binocular impairment.

The importance of Aniseikonia has been known since the 1940's, however only a small percentage of the eye care professionals have been treating the condition. First, an effective Aniseikonia test was not readily available (at least not until the Awaya test and this Software product). Second, the calculations to correct Aniseikonia (by changing base curve, refractive index, lens thickness, and vertex distance) were very complicated and time consuming. This has all changed now with the introduction of the Aniseikonia Evaluation Software.

Inability to diagnose Aniseikonia has often forced patient's to seek a solution from 3 or 4 different eye care professionals before relief is found.
