In adults, visual acuity is measured as ‘recognition
acuity’ which uses standard line tests. This type of test cannot be used in
examining infants and children with multiple handicaps. Visual acuity in this
younger group can be measured with grating acuity tests. In a grating acuity
test, the infant or child detects the presence of parallel lines of decreasing
width, a task simpler than recognizing optotypes.
Teller Acuity Laminated Card Set supports acuity
testing for the youngest children and other non-verbal patients. Acuity from
20/20 to 20/300 is measured. This test is based on vision research from
University of Washington. This is the full 17 calibrated cards and they are
laminated for longer life.
Some time ago, the Teller Acuity tests were 'out
of print' for a year. Then, about 2 years ago the University of Washington
appointed a new licensee and we were able to resume shipments. Unfortunately the
price had been increased to almost US $ 3000. More significantly we began to
experience rejections due to quality problems. These rejections became
increasingly frequent and we have now decided that Richmond Products will no
longer distribute the Teller sets.
In the meantime, the Cardiff
Acuity Set was re-engineered by Cardiff University and provides excellent
results for acuity testing children in the same 6 month to 36 month age range.
The price is less than half the Teller sets at $1200.
