Wavefront Aberrometry Patient Card

Wavefront technology has been a dramatic byproduct of the refractive surgery evolution over the past few years. The application of adaptive optics to measure human vision now allows assessment of aberrations in the vision system down to thousandths of a diopter. The "Poor Man's Aberrometer" was developed by Louis J. Catania, O.D., F.A.A.O., Jennifer Henson, O.D. and Ernst Nicolitz, M.D. to permit assessment of these higher order aberrations (HOAs) and their diagnostic implications in vision and eye care.

Using the "Poor Man's Aberrometer," the patient will be able to identify their HOAs (coma, spherical aberration, etc.) that have greater than 0.4 RMS aberrometry values.

When RMS values greater than 0.4 are identified, these values are believed to represent amounts of HOAs that could present clinically significant subjective visual symptoms and reduced contrast sensitivity (especially with spherical aberrations) with larger pupils and during mesopic and scotopic conditions.

These higher order visual findings are intended to help assessment of the patients' subjective symptoms, uncorrectable visions, reported problems with vision, even with a "20/20" corrected vision (e.g., in early cataract formation, ocular surface disorders, etc.).

For patients interested in refractive surgery procedures, HOA readings greater than 0.4 RMS strongly indicate the need for wavefront-guided custom ablation versus conventional LASIK or perhaps alternative refractive procedures and devices (e.g., other corneal procedures, intraocular lenses, specialized spectacles or contact lenses).

A schedule of upcoming lectures and courses on wavefront technology by Louis J. Catania, O.D., F.A.A.O is available at www.RichmondProducts.com.
