This "natural" Stereotest consists of three test plates(6mm, 3mm, and 1.5mm thick), which permit stereo acuity measurements in a range of 600 - 15 seconds. Each plate has printed on it four random-texture patterns and 'hidden' in one of these is a circular shape. The patient has to decide in which pattern the hidden shape lays, a task that can be done successfully only if stereopsis is present. The test has various advantages over other tests of stereoscopic depth perception. 

  • No special glasses are required.

  • The hidden shape can only be detected if stereopsis is present.

  • Test plates can be presented separately without the risk of the patient learning the correct answer.

  • Large stereo acuity range.

  • Suitable for a wide age range, even young pre-schoolers.

  • A standardized test situation with a measured viewing distance.

  • Good visual acuity is not essential.

 The advantage of the Frisby Stereotest is that it is a 'natural test', meaning that the patent does not have to wear diplopic (red/green) glasses or polarizing glasses. It also has a fairly large range for assessment.
