This DICTIONARY OF VISUAL SCIENCE
AND RELATED CLINICAL TERMS - Fifth Edition serves to help standardize the
meanings of terms used in the rapidly expanding Visual Sciences, Ophthalmology
and Optometry. It will help to clarify any terms with variable interpretation.
More than that, meanings of some terms continue to change and every single one
in this fifth edition has been reevaluated.
Since publication of the first
edition in 1960, the Dictionary of Visual Science has more than doubled
in length and scope. Previous editions added terms in the fields of ocular
anatomy, ocular physiology, ocular pathology, ocular pharmacology, ocular
embryology, neuro-ophthalmology, ocular histology, ocular genetics, comparative
anatomy of the eye, ocular prosthetics, psychological optics, ophthalmic optics,
geometrical optics, ocular refraction, orthoptics, vision therapy, ophthalmic
dispensing, aniseikonia, perimetry, contact lenses, low-vision aids,
occupational vision, motorist’s vision, and the phases of remedial reading,
illumination, and physical optics that relate closely to vision.
This fifth edition expands
coverage in all of these areas and especially in ocular disease and therapeutic
pharmaceutical agents. Updated entries include disease, test, and syndrome.
Many changes were driven by advances in the biomedical sciences and associated
technologies. Examples include computerized diagnostic instrumentation, laser
refractive surgery, and better understanding of systemic and ocular disease
processes. This new edition almost doubles the number of photographs and
illustrations to enhance understanding for the reader. The appendix has been
greatly expanded and reformatted to provide useful references for visual
scientists and for the benefit of clinical practitioners and students in
professional schools and colleges.
