Richmond Products, Inc was founded almost 60 years ago by P. Lloyd Powell (a former employee of Bausch & Lomb) and Ruth M. Powell to provide specialized Ophthalmic products to Bausch & Lomb. Over the years the product offering expanded as both Bausch & Lomb and American Optical discontinued smaller hand held testing devices used by Ophthalmologists and Optometrists.
The most significant product for Richmond Products became several types of color vision testing books. Based in New Brunswick, NJ and later Boca Raton, Florida, Richmond Products developed an End User catalog and a dealer base as an outlet for the products. More and more products were manufactured by Richmond Products and gradually a few products from other manufactures were distributed as well.
By 1999, due to the failing health of the founder, the company had declined in sales. In April 1999, Lloyd G. Powell and Elizabeth Griego-Powell purchased the business. Quickly, many new products were developed and marketing efforts were initiated. Since 2000, growth has exceeded 15% per year and the new and re-engineered products now represent 8 out of 10 of the top products in sales.
During the period of 2000 to 2002 Richmond Products worked with PhD’s, recognized in their field, from the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Southern California College of Optometry to re-engineer and print the Hardy Rand and Rittler (HRR) Pseudoisochromatic Plate test for color vision. Clinical trial results were printed in the Cambridge University Visual Neuroscience Journal May/June 2004. This product now outsells any other color vision test in medical schools in North America.
In 2005, Richmond Products manufacturing and customer service operations were consolidated in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Additional new products in the areas of Neuro-Ophthalmology, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Occupational Medicine have been added. Further, several products from Richmond Products have been used by the Pharmaceutical industry to support drug trials of their new Pharmaceutical products. These firms include Merck, Pfizer, Quintiles, Novartis, Sigma, GlaxoSmithKline, EMD Serono and Bausch & Lomb.
In 2010, Richmond Products installed 20KW of Solar production capability as part of an energy efficiency and cost savings measure. The number of products available to support international sales continues to grow. The HRR is now available with instructions in 24 languages. Many products now support testing of patients in their native language such as Spanish, French and Chinese.
